Your Easy Guide to Instagram’s New 2025 Image Sizes

Instagram recently updated its profile grid layout, shifting from the traditional 1:1 square format to a taller 4:5 aspect ratio. But, in case you didn’t know, 4:5 is the GRID image size — the actual feed content should be 3:4 ratio. Yeah, it’s confusing!

Apparently, this change was made in response to the increasing number of vertical photos and videos shared on the platform, and the new rectangular grid layout showcases these posts more effectively. (Reels posted to timelines almost always look terrible when cropped square, so this makes sense.)

However, if you designed your grid with the 1:1 aspect ratio in mind, you probably don’t love how it looks now. 🙁
In response to user feedback, Instagram says they’re exploring options to allow greater customization of thumbnail previews, aiming to give creators more control over their profile’s appearance. (I won’t hold my breath for this feature… they always do whatever they want. 🙄)

So, until the NEXT time Instagram messes with your grid, here is a quick reference guide, with a handy comparison of the old and new sizes. (You may want to bookmark 🔖 this page for future reference!)
